How to Offer Incense at a Buddhist Temple: Steps & Etiquette

Offering incense (bunhyang) is a gesture of respect in which you light one stick before the Buddha, commonly explained as wishing a clear mind to spread the way fragrance spreads. After lighting it, don't blow on it; wave it gently to put out the flame, place it upright in the middle of the burner with both hands, then give a half bow. In the online temple Hapjang (합장) you can offer incense at four burners (the Main Buddha Hall, the courtyard, the Quiet Light Grotto and the Smiling Cliff Buddha), and every visitor can see the rising smoke.

What does incense mean in Buddhism?

Incense is one of the classic offerings to the Buddha, alongside flowers, lamps and tea. The "five-part incense" (obunhyang) recited at the start of a service speaks of offering five kinds of incense of the mind: precepts, meditative concentration, wisdom, liberation, and the knowledge of liberation, and it values that state of mind more than the incense you can see. The type of incense and how many sticks are offered differ a little from temple to temple.

Incense etiquette in a temple hall

  • One stick is enough. If incense is already burning, you can skip it and simply bow.
  • The usual etiquette is to put out the flame by waving or fanning it with your hand, not by blowing on it.
  • Place the stick straight in the middle of the burner, and don't move sticks others have placed.
  • While you place your incense, step to the side so you don't block anyone who is bowing.

Stay a moment after placing it

Rather than turning away right after placing the stick, it's nice to watch the smoke rise in a single thread and drift apart. Taking a few slow breaths there while the incense burns turns the offering into a short meditation.

How to offer incense

  1. Half bow Stand before the incense burner, face the Buddha, put your palms together and give a half bow.
  2. Light it Take one stick and light its tip from a candle.
  3. Put out the flame Don't blow on it; wave the stick gently to put out the flame so only smoke remains.
  4. Place it with both hands Hold the stick in your right hand, supported by your left, raise it briefly to forehead height, then place it upright in the middle of the burner.
  5. Palms together and bow Step back, put your palms together and give a half bow. You may follow with three bows.

Try it in Hapjang

Walk up to any of the four incense burners and choose to offer incense; your character lifts the stick, places it and gives a half bow. Before the great Buddhas of the Quiet Light Grotto and the Smiling Cliff Buddha the movement is slower, pausing for a breath while holding the incense before placing it. The stick burns for 30 seconds, during which its smoke appears on every visitor's screen, and each person can offer one stick every 25 seconds. Offering incense adds the 香 stamp to your notebook.
